Urban foragers

‘Freeganism’ or ‘dumpster diving’ is an anti-consumerist movement that is becoming more prominent in Perth’s suburbs.

Dumpster divers, or Freegans as they are otherwise known, reject wasteful consumer culture by rummaging through skip bins behind supermarkets, bakeries and hardware stores in search of discarded food and household items.

These urban foragers are neither homeless nor poor and their reasons for dumpster diving run deeper than simply living and eating for free.

There is a strong sustainability ideology within the Freegan movement, and its participants are very passionate about reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfill.
