For the first time, China has overtaken New Zealand and become Australia’s largest inbound tourist market.
Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows there were 1.39 million Chinese visitors in the year ending February 2018, an increase of 13.2 per cent.
The growth is projected to continue with an expected 3.9 million visitors annually by 2026/27.
China has been the most valuable inbound tourist market since 2011, spending a record $10.4 billion in that time.
The 2017 China-Australia Year of Tourism celebrated the relationship between the two countries and boosted the number of Chinese tourists.
New Zealand still remains a strong market for Australia, with 1.36 million tourists arriving last year.
