Seven West Media’s planned purchase of the Sunday Times will not be opposed by the ACCC.
ACCC Chairman Rod Sims said the commission received a large number of responses about diversity and quality of news from consumers in Western Australia, and concerns from businesses who advertise in West Australian papers.
“Following an extensive review, the ACCC has reached the view that the proposed acquisition is, on balance, not likely to substantially lessen competition for either consumers or advertisers,” Mr Sims said.
“On the consumer side, the large decline in print newspaper readership formed a major part of our analysis. Many consumers in Western Australia are now getting their news online or from other sources.”
The Sunday Times is owned by News Corp and the sale is expected to proceed in the coming months. The deal also includes the sale of the Sunday Times’ website PerthNow.
