Beach, please

The federal government recently announced a $17.1 million dollar grant for the installation of wheelchair access across some Australian beaches.

Sorrento beach in Perth is the only WA location receiving the funding, partnering with Sorrento Surf Lifesaving Club to enable those in wheelchairs to participate in beach activities.

The funding is part of the Commonwealth Accessible Australia’s Initiative, said to cover 100 per cent of all-terrain wheelchairs, accessible paths, and remodelling facilities such as bathrooms to accomodate wheelchair users.

While some disability advocates have welcomed the scheme, there are frustrations about the funding levels and the detail of the implementation.

March is multiple sclerosis awareness month, and some people with MS say the initiative has a long way to go.

Kylie Jones was diagnosed with MS in 1998. Her husband Brett is her carer, and says it can be really frustrating to watch disability facilities, such as toilets, not being dedicated to those who need them.

“Much of the infrastructure aimed for the disabled use has been turned into spaces that get used for the general public,” he says.

Mr Jones says caring for someone in a wheelchair isn’t easy.

“There is more to think about beyond the blue bays and signs on toilet doors.”

Basil Merendino, who has MS, says the main problem for wheelchair users is general location as some beaches have no facilities, and some are too popular.

“As soon as we go to the beach, we’ve got no chance getting on the sand,” he says.

Organisational development and engagement manager at People With Disabilities WA Vanessa Jessett says the grant means access and inclusion for those with disabilities is possible, yet more work needs to be done.

“We have a coastal major city, and it’s a very large and long one, and to only have one beach, it would have been great to see a lot more beaches here in Western Australia to be made accessible,” she says.

Sorrento Beach Surf Life Saving Club and the local council will receive the funding later this year.
