Despite efforts state-wide to raise mental health awareness amongst young West Australians, experts warn their mental wellbeing is only getting worse.
Young people continue to be the worst impacted demographic by mental health issues with almost a third of young Australians experiencing suicidal behaviours. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare suicide is the leading cause of death among young people.
Zero2hero, a WA mental health charity for young people, has seen a rise in demand for its mental health services.
Zero2hero CEO Ashlee Harrison says a larger focus needs to be on preventing mental health issues from reaching a critical point. She says addressing financial issues, promoting a healthier living and engaging more with your community are essential for young people.
“We have worked with more young people this year [in half a year] than the entire year last year.”
