A controversial plan proposing the redevelopment of the Floreat Forum shopping precinct in Perth’s western suburbs continues to attract criticism from local residents, business owners and even the area’s mayor.
The Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage has encouraged the Floreat community to “Have your say, WA”.
It’s a slogan local Floreat resident Anna Leshchinskaya has embraced.
She and other locals have launched a campaign against the proposed plans.
Their concerns centre on the absence of redevelopment over a substantial portion of the forum. They say that were the plans to include those areas, the housing density goals would be met at a fraction of the height proposed, without the need for a 15-storey hi-rise.
My Healthy Place owner David Strophair has already seen one store closure in Karrinyup and is concerned this redevelopment may do the same to his Floreat location.
Despite this, Mr Strophair thinks the forum development is overdue but hopes it will be achieved in a way that minimises impacts on businesses in the shopping centre.
Similar issues were echoed by City of Cambridge Mayor Gary Mack.
He assures residents and ratepayers community concerns will be heard and says the open consultation process is available to everybody, including members of the public outside of the Town of Cambridge.
APIL Group owns the Floreat Forum precinct. A company spokesperson says community consultation has occurred at multiple stages already but APIL encourages further public feedback.
Members of the public can leave feedback about the proposal by submitting a form found on the DPLH website. Submissions close September 23.
