No bets on pets

A petition will be presented to state parliament later this month calling for a ban on greyhound racing in WA.

This petition was created after concerns for the wellbeing of greyhounds participating in the races.

Free the Hounds WA are the flagbearers for the petition and have been vocal about their concerns and issues.

Free the Hounds WA vice president Alan Dolphin says on-track deaths and injuries have increased massively in 2024 compared to last year.

In 2023, the on-track death count in WA was around nine while in 2024, the on-track death count is already 28.

According to an email response from Minister of Racing and Gaming in WA Paul Papalia to Mr Dolphin seen by the Western Independent, from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023, nine greyhounds died or were euthanized while 23 have been put down since then.

Hundreds of retired greyhounds then go on to rehabilitation centres and are put up for adoption.

Greyhound Angels WA is an organisation that works towards the welfare and rehabilitation of retired greyhounds.

Greyhound Angels WA adoption coordinator Sue Leitch says the condition of retired greyhounds varies from injuries to having no sign of injury from racing to others which are emotionally troubled.

Ms Leitch says the emotional disturbance is often the result of the greyhounds not being exposed to any outside environment since they have been raised in training since they were puppies.

In the matter of the petition, the Greyhound Angels WA refused to comment.

Georgia and Lily are two retired greyhounds who have been re-homed after rehabilitation.

Georgia was adopted by Jessica Albrow, from Victoria Park, three years ago and says the rehabilitation process for Georgia was not easy due to the trauma she experienced during racing.

Georgia was deemed unfit for racing after an on-track crash which led to a head injury and left a traumatic effect on her.

However, Georgia has now made great progress in recovery and, according to Ms Albrow, is now happy with her new home with Jessica’s family and her new friend Lily.

WA Greyhound Racing Association and Racing and Wagering WA did not respond to a request to comment on the petition.
