After winning the Asia showcase series and securing $25 thousand in prize money, the Western Force has decided to give back to the community in a big way.
Returning home with an undefeated record against the Asia Pacific Dragons and the South China Tigers, the team has decided to start a competition between schools and local rugby clubs.
There is one very exciting aspect to the competition, a share in the $25 thousand winners’ cheque.
First year recruit Carlo Tizzano says he doesn’t believe the Western Force has done anything like this before but it is such an exciting opportunity giving back to the local community.
“…I know we all love giving back to the community, it’s actually a highlight for us, especially when we get given a few hours at our own clubs. All our boys get around that straight away,” he says.
In the lead up to the Kagifa Samoa and Fijian Latui games in Perth on May 31 and June 21, each RugbyWA affiliated club and school will receive special vouchers for free tickets for these games.
The three clubs and schools that have the most people through the gates at both games will win a share of the $25 thousand.
The club decided to start the competition because it is an opportunity to give back to a community that has given so much to them.
“At the end of the day, especially for me, I wouldn’t be where I am now without the Perth rugby community…,” Mr Tizzano says.
His local club, UWA, will especially benefit from some of the money up for grabs he says.
“I know my club would love it because it’s always nice to have a bit of extra cash to do maybe renovations or more kit, or maybe get more players over… it’ll be unreal,” he says.
He hopes the competition will see more attendance at the games and the prize money will help the local clubs and schools.
