Search for missing kayaker continues at Point Peron

The search for a missing kayaker continued today at Point Peron despite rough weather conditions.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a strong wind warning for Perth local waters with winds reaching up to 30 knots

Stephen Angel was last heard from yesterday when he activated an emergency beacon at 10.45am.

The 59-year-old’s kayak was located a few miles off Point Peron, but Mr Angel was not onboard.

Capricorn Sea Kayaking owner Hal Paine said strong offshore winds were extremely dangerous to kayakers.

“Yesterday’s conditions weren’t favourable for kayaking with winds 15-20 knots offshore,” he said.

“He was a dangerous distance offshore and must’ve known he was in trouble as he had time to activate his EPIRB, however it is unclear whether he was wearing a life jacket.

“Today’s conditions were the complete opposite with strong onshore winds, meaning he would’ve been pushed towards shore rather than away.”

The search will likely continue tomorrow.
