Suspected fire bug strikes in Balga

A police investigation is underway after three separate fires were lit this morning in Balga.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) was called to locations in Balga at around 6am to put out the blazes and were able to keep them from spreading to homes in the area.

A resident on Birchley Crescent was the first to be hit when his car was set on fire, followed by two bushfires in Celebration Park, less than 500m away.

The owner of the car, Meigl Albrecht, says it isn’t the first time he has been hit.

He believes it is the same group of people committing crimes in the area since December.

“They stole bikes from us and other stuff. They broke into a taxi here, they scratched the same car, the passenger side is all scratched,” he says.

“My housemate said your car is on fire and I was thinking they were just joking around and I came out and saw.”

Other nearby residents seemed unworried by the fires.

David Rankin said there is always criminal activity in the area around Celebration Park.

“There is plenty of drug paraphernalia found in the carpark. People are sleeping here rough quite often,” he said.

“We are looking at moving, might move somewhere with a couple of acres around it so that we’re well away from everyone else.”

Police are yet to make an arrest and are asking residents with CCTV on their houses to please contact them.

Anyone with information about the fires can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
