Royal wedding fever: where excitement meets indifference

Perth get ready: the Royal wedding nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are almost here and if your plans are still up in the air for this Saturday night, here are a few things Perth is doing to celebrate.

In honour of Queen Victoria, it’s only fitting The Vic in Subiaco is celebrating the Royal marriage with typical British food and pint specials.

Part-owner of the Hay Street establishment, Joe Steinberg, says punters can expect a UK-styled menu.

“On Saturday we will be serving typical British food like bangers and mash,” he says.

“An afternoon tea will be on offer as well.”

The Vic’s promotional Facebook event has had a good response with some tables already booked for Saturday night.

The event kicks off at 7pm.

Wolf Lane, a bar located in the Perth CBD, will be holding a Royal Wedding Bash with UK tunes playing all night and drink specials with a British twist.

Marketing Coordinator Ailsa McKechnie says there will be special cocktails on offer.

“We have a special teapot cocktail for $25, called the Jam Scone, with vodka, chambord, lime, lemonade and, of course, jam,” she says.

“We also have our Howl Specials all night, as we do every Saturday, where if you quote ‘Wolf’ you get access to $7 selected beer, wine and spirits of the week.”

Ms McKechnie says they expect their usual crowd with the possibility of some extra traffic.

“The response to the Facebook event has been good, as we’re not hosting a formal event, more a celebration,” she says.

“We’re just planning to be a stop for people on the night.

“I think a lot of people will be watching the wedding at home then heading out to celebrate.

“Because we all love any excuse to celebrate!”

Wolf Lane will open its doors from 4PM and a DJ will start at 7PM.

Baker and cupcake maker, Cupcakes by Gigi, has had requests for Royal wedding-themed cupcakes and has since jumped on the wedding bandwagon.

“I was contacted by only a few ladies asking for this style of cupcake in celebration of the Royal wedding,” she says.

“I decided to then advertise on my Facebook page to generate more sales.”

Ms Gigi says she will create a custom-made batch of royal-themed cupcakes.

“It is not something that is requested usually but due to the upcoming wedding a few people are having parties at home while watching the televised event,” she says.

Meanwhile, the Perth Mint has released a limited edition commemorative Silver Proof Coin to mark the occasion.

The coin features the Buckingham Palace-approved design with inscription of the couples’ names and the date of event beneath wedding bells with a sprig of myrtle.

The Mint will only release 5,000 of the Royal Wedding 2018 1oz Silver Proof Coin.
