A 31-year-old man has been sentenced to five years in jail for killing his partner in their Kununurra home in September last year.
Lee Bidwee pleaded guilty to the manslaughter killing of 25-year-old Papita Rose Fabian, which took place during an argument.
The incident occurred about 5am on Thursday September 28. Bidwee picked up a butcher’s knife and waved it at the victim after she struck him in the head.
The blade made contact with the victim’s upper left thigh whereupon Bidwee immediately applied first aid, called an ambulance and held her until it arrived.
Ms Fabian was taken to hospital where she died a short time later.
The pair had been drinking and smoking cannabis heavily every day for more than two weeks leading up to the event.
Justice Anthony Derrick said he had given Bidwee a lighter sentence because he did not intend to harm his partner.
Bidwee was originally held in a Kimberley prison but had to be transferred to Perth because he was targeted by the victim’s family.
He will be eligible for parole in three years.
