The mountain is calling

The Virgin Australia Supercars will hit the iconic Mt Panorama track today for the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 qualifying.

Current championship leader Scott McLaughlin, from Dick Johnson Racing, will head into qualifying as favourite after breaking the lap record set in 2015 by six time Supercars championship winner Jamie Whincup in the fifth and final practice session.

WA driver Garth Tander and his co-driver James Golding, who are competing for Garry Rogers Motorsport, have been consistently fast in the practice sessions and will be aiming for a top 10 result.

“Awesome to be back at the mountain. Car was very good today,” Tander posted on Twitter today.

Tander, who is a three-time Bathurst winner, will be the only main driver competing from Perth while Dean Fiore and Karl Reindler, who are also from WA, are racing in the event as co-drivers.

Kalgoorlie born Fiore, driving for Nissan Motorsport, finished the final co-driver practice in 15th place while former Curtin University student Reindler, who is competing for Charlie Schwerkolt Racing, finished in 19th.

This year’s 59th running of the Bathurst 1000 will have 26 entries with a total of 52 drivers.

Qualifying will begin at 12.50pm AWST and the session will last 50 minutes.
