The West Australian Police Band celebrated their 50th anniversary in the city today.
The band marched through James Street at 10am this morning.
WA Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan was present at the march, and said the pipe band do approximately 240 engagements a year.
“That’s nearly one a day, and they’re out there in all parts of the community,” he said.
Police media director Neil Stanbury said the band had been the heartbeat of the WA Police since 1966.
“Nearly every police officer who’s graducated from the academy in that time has begun their career to the sound of the band, which is believed to ahve missed just two graduation parades in all that time, with those absemces as a result of being overseas,” he said.
