A hoon driver has been charged with reckless driving after he crashed into a barrier in the Northbridge tunnel during the early hours of last Thursday morning.

Police will allege the man was travelling at speeds of up to 180 km/h when he swerved to miss another car and spun out of control.

The driver was in a Honda Accord sedan, which was seriously damaged in the incident.

After the crash, the driver tried to tow the car before reporting the crash to police.

He will appear in court in June.
