James Cook’s Endeavour ‘found’ on the ocean floor

A group of researchers have discovered what they believe are the remains of Captain James Cook’s ship Endeavour – the ship used for his voyage to Australia.

The Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project pinpointed wreckage off the coast of Rhode Island at Newport Harbour.

The group mapped nine archaeological sites, which related to groups of ships that were scuttled in 1778.

They have identified one of the ships as being Endeavour.

Endeavour was renamed The Lord Sandwich during the American Revolutionary War before it was sunk off the coast of Rhode Island.

An Australian National Maritime Museum grant allowed the group to locate historic documents in London which identified where each ship was scuttled.
