Nelson tore her ACL whilst training yesterday and has since undergone an MRI to confirm the injury. Nelson was to represent Australia at the Rio Olympics in August.
The 29-year-old has been a member of the Hockeyroos since 2008 and had played more than 170 games as a forward.
Nelson said on Twitter she was not having the best day but would recover.
