Fire guts Como shops, arson squad investigates

A suspicious fire that destroyed a Como barber shop last night has forced a neighbouring business to close its doors because of extensive fire and water damage.

Busy Bee Deli owner Gautam Gautam said the fire, which caused an estimated $250,000 damage to the Diamond Barber Shop at the corner of Canning Highway and Barker Avenue, had also damaged his premises.

Mr Gautam said he was unsure of when he would be able to resume business.

“I have lost most of my stock because of the flames, but also because of the water damage from putting out the fire,” he said.

Mr Gautam said he received a call from one of his customers at 11.20pm, informing him of the fire.

“I only live a couple of minutes away from my shop so I came straight away,” he said.

“I have not been allowed to go close to the shop, so I cannot say how much damage there is.

“All the freezers and fridges are gone though.”

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said six fire crews responded after the fire was reported at 11pm.

Mr Gautam said he did not know how long the clean up would take.

“It really is just too early to tell,” he said.

A WA Police spokeswoman said the arson squad was investigating the cause of the blaze.
