Jumps racing: creating legend gallopers or mistreating horses?

The debate over whether jumps racing can be considered cruelty to animals is not a new one; but this year’s Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase saw the sport gain more media attention than it has in recent history, and all for the wrong reasons.

The event made international headlines when only two of the starting eight horses finished and one of the competing horses jumped a safety barrier into a crowd of onlookers.

As a result, campaigns from animal activists, such as the RSPCA, have gained voice and support that were previously lacking.

In turn they have pressured MPs to defend the sport amid claims it is “animal cruelty”.

With the amount of attention this year’s event received, it doesn’t seem long until a harsh decision has to be made.
