
In 2011 the WA state government declared the town of Oombulgurri must be closed down. The remaining residents were given until November that year to leave, many of them settling in nearby Wyndham.
In 2008, a Coronial inquest had exposed a culture of addiction, suicide, and sexual assault in many Indigenous communities. The state government declared its intention to close up to 100 communities as a result, however Oombulgurri was one of the only communities closed down.
For the people with connections to the land dating tens of thousands of years, it remains a heartbreaking decision.
