Free meals for people in need

Sisters Supa IGA in Joondalup has provided more than 900 meals for those in need through its Pay It Forward incentive.

Deli manager Aisling Mooney said the initiative came about after staff had noticed people stealing food from the store.

“We had a lot of people coming into the store who were taking food without going through the checkout,” she said.

“They were owning up and saying they were desperate for a meal.”

Pay It Forward allowed customers to pay an extra $5 to donate a food voucher to be used by anyone in the community.

“That way the people who are hungry can come in and use that voucher to pick a free hot meal,” Ms Mooney said.

“We have had so many people coming in and the customers have been so generous, it is amazing.”
