Curtin Students Run ‘Pop Up’ Election Newsroom

Curtin Journalism and Fairfax Media have joined forces to operate a ‘pop up’ newsroom for the WA state election to be held on Saturday.

The project involves a team of Curtin Journalism students who will work under the guidance of Curtin and Fairfax staff, through its Western Australia platform WAtoday, and will involve election coverage from today (March 7) until March 13.

A team of 15 Curtin Journalism students will work on a roster from a room on the Curtin campus at Bentley.

The Curtin staff team is led by Mr Glynn Greensmith and the student team by Jonathan Daly, while the Fairfax team will be led by designated chiefs-of-staff from WAtoday.

The stories produced by the Curtin students will be submitted for publication on WAtoday, potentially reaching hundreds of thousands of people.

“WAToday is delighted to be collaborating with Curtin at this hugely important time for Western Australia,” WAToday editor David Baker said.

“Our reporters are already on the ground in search of key issues which will impact the result of the election, and consequently the future of residents across the state.

“WAToday has shown time and again it is a go-to point for many people in Perth, particularly when it comes to breaking news. This exercise won’t change that – rather, it will provide future journalists an unprecedented opportunity to learn in a live environment and contribute to our extensive coverage on a critical election for WA.”
