Passengers left fuming over Bali flight cancellations

Disgruntled Perth passengers are trying to book flights to Bali with AirAsia after Tigerair failed to notify them of further flight delays to Indonesian island.an2a9502

AirAsia flights continued last night while Tigerair and Jetstar cancelled their flights because of the threat of a volcanic ash cloud from Mount Rinjani, near Lombok.

Yesterday’s 7.45pm Tigerair flight was rescheduled for noon today, but was then delayed until 4pm.

Tigerair passenger Damien, who did not want his surname published, said travellers were told the airline would notify them of any changes to today’s flight. But he was not notified of the delay.

“We were told we would receive an email and text at 8.30am this morning to let us know what was going on,” he said.

Unhappy passengers tried to change airlines, but AirAsia flights were booked out for last night and only limited seats were available this morning.

Jetstar passenger Shauna Stone said her family’s flight was cancelled yesterday but they had booked an 11.20am flight with AirAsia today.

“We’ve got a travel agent on it but she couldn’t book anything and told us we had to come in [to the airport] to book the flight,” Ms Stone said.

AirAsia spokeswoman Helena White said because Jetstar and Tigerair were based in Australia, they would have to divert to Port Hedland if it was too dangerous to land in Bali.

“We’ve had no delays or cancellations because we’re Indonesia-based and can divert closer to Bali if we need to,” Ms White said.

AirAsia passenger Hillary Brakewell said her sister had flown from Sydney to Perth and stayed overnight after the Tigerair flight was cancelled.

“The same thing happened last year in November. We were stuck in Bali for a week trying to get flights out,” Ms Brakewell said.

Some flights leaving Bali were also cancelled, leaving hundreds of tourists stranded at Ngurah Rai airport in Denpasar.
