Curtin Student Guild backs free drug testing plan

The Curtin Student Guild says it supports drug testing kits being provided to students on campus.

The guild’s comments come after Melbourne University’s Student Guild announced yesterday it would be handing out pill testing kits to promote safer drug use.

The kits would allow students to determine what their pills contained before deciding whether to use them.

Curtin Student Guild president Jake Wittey said student drug use was a reality.

“The Curtin Student Guild supports any move to minimise harm as a result of recreational drug usage, whether it be a legal or illegal drugs,” he said.

“We don’t condone illegal drug consumption, but we know it’s happening and we ought to reduce the harm.

“It’s a prudent move by the University of Melbourne Student Union to offer free drug testing kits, as well as information about the various types of drugs and their impact.”
