Michael McGlinn followed the man after he saw the man leaving a neighbour’s house on Sheldrake Street in Willetton about 1pm on April 14. He confronted the man on Malindi St.

Mr McGlinn said he backed away after being threatened with a screwdriver. The man then ran to Mr McGlinn’s white Toyota Camry and got in the driver’s seat.

“I opened the passenger door and tackled him and he hit the accelerator and it forced me back onto the road,” Mr McGlinn said.

“We had a couple of confrontations before we got to Malindi Street, and that’s when the incident happened. I was pretty lucky to get out of it without any serious injury, just had a few scratches.”

Det. Const. Brad Smith said the offender stole about $5000 of items from Mr McGlinn’s neighbours’ house, including an engagement ring.

Mr McGlinn said he chased the offender out of instinct.

“The adrenaline was pumping and I just wanted the bag of valuables back. I was only scared at the end when he pointed the screwdriver at me and threatened to put it between my eyes and kill me,” Mr McGlinn said.

Det. Const. Smith described the offender as being a caucasian male of 25 to 30 years of age with a stocky build, wearing all black clothing.
