1000-person CHOGM march

JESSICA DREIER

Activists are planning a 1000-person march for the first day of Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting talks on October 28.

Protestors will raise several issues including the rights of asylum seekers and Aboriginal people.

Queen Elizabeth II is one of 3000 delegates set to descend on Perth for the biennial meeting of Commonwealth leaders.

WA Police say they have been in close contact with activist groups to ensure any protests occur peacefully.

Police spokesman Samuel Dinnison says as long as protests are done lawfully and respectfully, activists should not encounter any problems.

CHOGM last occurred in Australia in 2002 when then Prime Minister John Howard chaired the meeting at Coolum on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
